Mrs Nina Flannery Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

It is with great sadness we announce the unexpected passing of Nina Light Flannery. She was a much-loved daughter, sister, aunt, godmother, cousin, friend, and member of the Highlands Community. Nina Louise was born in Long Branch, New Jersey on March 30, 1949, to the late Dinnie and Anna (Smith) Light. She was a 5th generation Highlander, graduating from Henry Hudson High School, Class of 1967. After time spent in North Carolina and California, she came home to Highlands and stayed involved in her hometown up until her death. While in California, Nina entered the corporate world and continued to rise through the ranks through hard work and perseverance. Upon her return to Highlands, Nina traveled the SeaStreak daily to Wall Street where she spent several years working for Alan Greenspan as his executive office manager. Following her time in New York, she and friend Paula opened the Basket Case in Fair Haven, where she enjoyed another aspect of the business. In 2009, after working 22 years as the Highlands Borough Clerk, she retired. She took great pride in her work for the borough. Nina was an avid reader, enjoyed the Arts at the local theater, and was a collector of paintings and photographs. She was always looking to share a new recipe with her friends and family. Nina played MAHJONG, took peaceful drives to Sandy Hook, and often enjoyed a latte and conversation at the Water Witch Cafe. She loved to travel; with her last trip being to New Mexico where she enjoyed her time, took in the views of the Hot Air balloons and local culture. Nina dedicated her retired life to the Highlands community serving on the Highlands Board of Education, The Garden Club, The Little Free Library, and The Historical Society of Highlands. Nina was also recently inducted into the Lions Club. She will be remembered for her guidance and the love she brought to people’s hearts. Besides her parents, Nina is predeceased by her step-father and Dad, James Bovie of NJ, brother Dinnie Light Sr. and recently her brother and sister-in-law Thomas Sr. and Alice (Kruis) Light, all of Connecticut. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law Barbara and Albert Wirth of Florida, cousins Joann of North Carolina, Susan of Texas, and Nick in NJ, sister-in-law Marie Light of CT, and former husband Jack Flannery of NJ, as well as several nieces; nephews, great-nieces & nephews. She was godmother to Thomas Light and Wendy Self and Amanda Newman. Nina had many loving friends that spanned across the United States as well as in her hometown. She often spoke of friends including those from the coffee shop and those she volunteered with. Most of all, Nina loved her family and cherished time spent with them, either sitting at Mount Mitchell or on the back porch sipping tea. Per Nina's wishes, no services will be held at this time. If so inclined, donations in Nina's memory may be made to The Historical Society of Highlands Nina Light Flannery Scholarship. We feel this is a fitting tribute to a woman proud of her town's past, active in its present, and working for its future.
